Gigs Ladder Comp - Finals Week 2
Our last update in round 20 had seen the Footy Maths Institute (FMI) cut its margin behind leader Adam Cardosi from 14 in round 15 to just eight. Another five weeks down the track and it looks like going right down the wire between those two, with plenty of other entrants still in line to grab one of the minor placings.
After round 20, Adam's score was 54 and he had a gap of eight over FMI (62). Six behind FMI were Cookie and Gigs (yours truly) on 56 and two behind those two were Old Blue Stager and Gavin T (54), making up the top five.
Here's what happened next:
ROUND 21: Scores improved all over with Adam dropping to 48, maintaining his eight-point buffer over FMI (56). Cookie was still six behind on 62 but Gigs had dropped back to equal fourth, equal with Old Blue Stager on 64.
ROUND 22: Adam dropped to 46, stretching his lead over FMI (56) to 10. Old Blue Stager continued his charge, moving into outright third place with a score of 62, with Cookie and A Second Layer of Wrap two further back on 64.
ROUND 23: No change in the top two with Adam still on 46 and FMI on 56. Old Blue Stager was still third on 62 but had been joined by A Second Layer of Wrap, with Cookie fifth on 64.
And that, dear ladderists, took us to the end of the home and way season but by no means the end of the Gigs Ladder Comp. Just as the AFL is all about where you finish after the Grand Final, so too is the ladder comp. And, boy, did the first week of the finals have a surprise in store for us!
FINALS WEEK 1: With eighth-placed North beating fifth-placed Richmond and seventh (Adelaide) defeating sixth (Footscray) the AFL ladder took on a new look and the Ladder Comp ladder also changed dramatically. Adam's score went up (that's bad) and FMI's went down (that's good) and when the weekend was done both Adam and FMI were locked together on top with 50 points. Old Blue Stager was still third, now on 58, while Cookie had moved back up to fourth on 60. Equal fifth were Gigs (me) and Oliver Gigacz (son of me) on 62.
Which brings us to the here and now, FINALS WEEK 2: Having expended all it's energy making it to equal top spot in finals week 1, the Institute slipped back to second place on 54 points, two behind Adam's 52. And there are now no fewer than five ladderists in equal third place. The '62' five are Old Blue Stager, Cookie, Gigs, Rhysboy and Gavin T.
With two weeks and three matches to go (four if the Grand Final is a draw) this is truly a wide-open affair, with FMI a big chance to pinch the title from Adam, who has occupied top spot since round seven!
The ladder ladder is below, with the electronic version to hit your email inboxes later tonight.
Until next week, get excited and happy laddering!
