Micro Noises 93: 300 of the best
Not a hunky dory Corey story
Geelong's loss to Melbourne was a disappointment for the Cats on what was meant to be a day of celebration, with Corey Enright playing his 300th AFL match. Enright is the third Geelong player to reach the magical 300 mark, behind Sam Newman and Ian Nankervis. Unfortunately the 300th games for both Newman and Nankervis were also losses for the Cats. Geelong's poor record in '300ths' got us wondering how other clubs have fared with the same milestone games of their players.
It turns out that, when it comes to 300th games, Richmond does it best. The Tigers have played four matches in which their player has notched up his 300th match and been successful on each occasion. The only other side with a perfect record is Fremantle, with Matthew Pavlich being a winner in his 300th.
At the other end of the scale, the Cats at least aren't alone with a 'zero from three' record. Fitzroy was a loser in each of Kevin Murray, Bernie Quinlan and Len Thompson's 300th games, while Port Adelaide have a 0-2 record, and Melbourne and GWS are both 0-1.
Hawthorn has played in eight matches in which a player has notched up his 300th, more than any other club. The Hawks had mixed results in those matches, with five wins and three losses.
West Coast, Gold Coast and University are the three clubs without a player to have reached the 300 mark. The 300-game ladder is...

Two's company... and so is 50,023
Ask any Hawthorn fan what their favourite crowd size is and they'll probably give you a strange look and move slowly away from you. But they should in fact answer with the number 50,023. That was the official crowd total at the Adelaide Oval last Thursday when the Hawks beat the Crows and, on the only other occasion it was a crowd total, Hawthorn also won. The Hawks defeated West Coast by 25 points at the MCG in front of 50,023 fans in the last round of 2012.
4.3 times three at the 'G
Those with an eye for detail might have spotted that the quarter-time score in both matches at the MCG saw the away side leading 4.3 to 4.2. The previous Monday saw Collingwood ahead of GWS, 4.3 to 2.3, at quarter time, making it three consecutive matches at the 'G' in which the home side was 4.3 at the first change. 4.3 was also a quarter-time score for away sides Geelong in round one and Sydney in round six at the MCG. All sides bar the Cats went on the win those matches.
First among unequals
It wasn't all bad news for Brisbane last Saturday night. Despite getting pounded by the Bulldogs to the tune of 72 points, the Lions at least has the satisfaction of playing in the first VFL/AFL game in history to finish with a final score of 146 v 74.
Score Wars
Adelaide's loss to Hawthorn last Thursday gave us the sixth final score of 85 this season. 85 is now the second most common score of 2015, behind 78, which has come up seven times.
Postcode of the week
Port Adelaide was certainly off the boil last Saturday at the MCG, losing to bottom-placed Carlton by four points. The Power have this weekend off and perhaps the players were subconsciously already in holiday mode during their match against the Blues. This is supported by the fact that they scored 3, 2, 3 and 2 behinds in each of their four quarters, and 3232 is the postcode of the popular holiday resort town in Victoria, Lorne.
Ridiculous footy anagram of the week
Cats fans must have turned to the heavens and wondered what they'd done wrong to be punished on what should have been a glorious celebration of Corey Enright's 300th appearance in a Geelong jumper. Almost everyone at Kardinia Park was a Geelong supporter hoping for a win but the Demons came along and spoiled the party by toppling the Cats. And while we acknowledge that the Dees didn't exactly ruin Enright's entire playing career by winning, we couldn't help but notice that COREY ENRIGHT'S THREE HUNDRED GAMES (AND COUNTING) is an anagram of THE DEES RUINED MY CAREER (GOD SHUNNING CAT THRONG).
Micro Noises is Andrew Gigacz's regular, quirky look at all things footy. The name Micro Noises is an anagram of Enrico Misso, who played one game for St Kilda in 1985. He remains the only Enrico and the only Misso to have played footy at the highest level.
