The death of Dolly Christy
Left ▼
The friends of that veteran footballer, David ‘Dolly’ Christy, together with those football enthusiasts who used to watch with interest his fine playing of the Australian game, will regret to learn that Mr Thomas Wilson, of Alexander Road Fremantle, has received a telegram from Mr W. Christy, Ballarat, intimating that Dolly was interred in Adelaide on Wednesday. His death has removed one of the most notable figures in football circles of the whole of Australia.
Dolly had a record second to none connected with the great winter game. He played senior football in Victoria and Western Australia for 28 years without a break and was always there to give and take the hard knocks incidental to the game. He commenced his career as a senior footballer with the Ballarat Club in 1885 and was one of the leading players for several years. He was then induced to go to Melbourne, as so many of the provincial players of Victoria did. With the Melbourne club he was the star ruck man for about five years and then in about 1897 he migrated to Western Australia and with several other enthusiastic footballers was instrumental in forming the East Fremantle club with whom he played until 1913.
The deceased was right at the top of the tree as a footballer for many years and represented his State (Victoria) against South Australia in a series of interstate matches before he left for Western Australia.
On and off the playing arena Dolly was always a gentleman and although he received abuse at times for rough play, there was no vice in his style, but always clean, robust football. In the old Ballarat Rowing Club Dolly was also one of the mainstays of rowing on Lake Wendouree and rowed in the interstate race on one occasion with success. A large circle of friends will receive the news of his death with keen regret.
