The Vikings have a long, illustrious history which has seen them claim numerous premierships at various grades in several different competitions. The club currently competes in Division One of the Western Region Football League having been granted promotion after enjoying successive Division Two grand final triumphs in 2004 and 2005. They overcame Deer Park 11.14 (80) to 8.7 (55) in the former season and Glenorden by a hefty 69 point margin in the latter. Their most recent flag came in Division One in 2012 when they accounted for Spotswood in the grand final by the narrowest conceivable margin, 14.7 (91) to 12.18 (90). Since then the Vikings have continued to perform relatively strongly, contesting the finals in 2013 for a fourth place finish, 2015 (fifth) and 2016 (third), before narrowly missing out (sixth) in 2017. The 2018 season brought a return to the finals fray as the Vikings won the minor premiership only to suffer the disappointment of a 'straight sets' exit at the hands of Deer Park and Hoppers Crossing. Another minor premiership followed in 2019 but once again the Vikings failed to convert, ultimately reaching the grand final only to succumb by three points to Deer Park.
After spending the 2020 season in enforced recess because of the coronavirus pandemic Altona will be hoping to go one better than in 2019 when football resumes in 2021.
