Monash Gryphons

Monash Gryphons Amateur Football Club was formed in 1991 by members and associates of the Chisholm Institute of Technology Staff and Student Union. It entered a single team in the VAFA’s G Section the same year. In 1994 a reserve team was added.\n\nThe Gryphons have twice achieved promotion as a losing grand finalist: in F Section in 1998, when they lost by 21 points to Hawthorn Amateurs, and in 2003 in D3 Grade when they were beaten by Swinburne University by 89 points.\n\nIn 2006 the senior side, coached for the second successive year by former club captain and dual best and fairest winner Steve Bourbon, won 5 out of 18 games to finish eighth in D3 Grade. Meanwhile the reserves reached the grand final only to suffer a heart-breaking loss by the narrowest of margins. The 2007 season produced a similar result for the seniors, who avoided relegation to D4 Section only on percentage, while the reserves plummeted down the list to seventh after managing only half a dozen victories for the year. Both grades showed a fair amount of improvement in 2008, the seniors winning 9 games and the reserves 10, good enough in both instances for fifth place on the ladder.\n\nBy contrast, the 2009 season was one to forget as the seniors managed just half a dozen wins for the year to slump to the wooden spoon.
