Moonee Valley

Moonee Valley Football Club has enjoyed a long and distinguished history as a member of the Essendon District Football League. The senior side was particularly strong during the early 1950s, winning its only A Grade flag to date in 1953, as well as more recently in the 1990s. After winning the B Grade premiership in 1994 the seniors acquitted themselves well in A Grade the next year, ultimately finishing fourth. A combination of injuries and the loss of key players scuppered the club’s ambitions, however, and within three years the team was back in B Grade.

One of the most noteworthy seasons in the Magpies’ history came in 1999 when both seniors and reserves went top in B Grade. The seniors held their own in A Grade for the next few seasons before succumbing to relegation in 2005 when they managed just 1 win from 18 matches for the year. When a third tier, Division Two, was added to the EDFL in 2012 this was where the Valley found themselves. They promptly made the 2012 grand final, but lost to East Keilor by 8 points. A year later they again finished runners-up with Hillside having the better of them on this occasion. The Valley have continued to perform strongly and have only missed the finals once in their first seven seasons in Division Two.
