Panton Hill Football Club - the Redbacks - have enjoyed only sporadic success over the course of their long history. However, in recent seasons there have been signs that the corner may have been turned. Competing in the NFL's Division Three competition the Redbacks qualified for the finals in 2010 and 2011 before reaching the 2012 grand final, only to lose to Mernda. A year later, however, they swept all before them, heading the ladder at the end of the home and away series and then downing Watsonia on two occasions - in contrasting fashion - during the finals to claim the flag. The second semi final was a one sided affair, with Panton Hill cruising to victory by 44 points, 13.21 (99) to 8.7 (55). A fortnight later, however, the grand final went right down to the wire with the Redbacks sneaking in by the narrowest possible margin, 13.9 (87) to 13.8 (86).
As premiers of Division Three Panton Hill were promoted to Division Two which is where they remained for four seasons although it would be fair to acknowledge that they scarcely set the world on fire during that time. After retaining their Division Two status only on percentage in 2016 the Redbacks were relegated to Division Three at the conclusion of a 2017 season which saw them win just once in eighteen outings en route to the wooden spoon. The 2018 season brought a Division Three grand final appearance but opponents St. Mary's proved to have the Redbacks' measure and eased home by 13 points, 11.7 (73) to 8.12 (60).
