Poowong

After crossing to the Ellinbank and District Football League from the Bass Valley Football League in 1967 Poowong enjoyed a magnificent first season with all three grades qualifying for the finals, and the seniors eventually claiming the premiership with an 11.19 (85) to 6.15 (61) grand final defeat of Neerim Neerim South. Moreover, both Allan Jones for the seniors and Frank Sorrell for the reserves were successful in their respective competition’s best and fairest player awards.\n\nOver the course of the four decades since 1967 the Magpies have been among the EDFL’s most consistently successful clubs. During the 1970s the seniors contested no fewer than seven grand finals, four of which were won. The 1980s proved less noteworthy, but still produced a couple of flags from four grand finals, and there have since been two further triumphs, in 1991 and 2003.\n\nBy comparison, the Magpies’ other grades have been somewhat less successful, with the reserves so far claiming just two premierships, the thirds five, and the fourths and fifths yet to open their accounts.
