The Joeys' first senior grade Geelong Football League premiership to date was attained in 1989 by means of an 18.14 (122) to 10.5 (65) grand final defeat of St. Mary’s. They reached the grand final, only to lose, in 1988, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2006 and 2009. Finally, in 2015, they broke through for their second flag with a 13.15 (93) to 11.9 (75) grand final defeat of Newtown and Chilwell. Two years later they added a third premiership when they topped the ladder before downing St. Mary's on grand final day by 63 points, 18.16 (124) to 9.7 (61). Finally, in 2018 they once again went top, with their 13.8 (86) to 11.11 (77) grand final defeat of St. Mary's representing revenge for a 51 point loss to the same side three weeks earlier in the qualifying final.
The Joeys endured a torrid introduction to senior grade footy when they commenced in the Geelong and District Football League in 1973, losing every match contested en route to the wooden spoon. The side's first win did not arrive until midway through their second season, and most of the remainder of the 1970s were, to put it succinctly, testing. However, improvement soon followed in the next decade with the Joeys going top in both 1982 and 1984. In the wake of the second of these successes St. Joseph's earned admission to the significantly more powerful Geelong Football League in which, as intimated above, they have since the turn of the century stamped themselves as a power.
