Terrigal Avoca

Terrigal Avoca’s history has coincided with football’s emergence as a viable part of the sporting culture in New South Wales’s Central Coast region. The club has also contributed in no small measure to that emergence, both by means of its consistent on-field success, and through providing players of all ages, from under tens to seniors, with a well-managed, appropriately structured outlet for their talents.\n\nAs far as on-field success goes, Terrigal Avoca wasted no time in laying down the gauntlet to rival teams. A founder member in 1976 of the Central Coast Australian Football League, the Panthers won everything going in their debut year: the premiership, thanks to closely fought a grand final defeat of Gosford, and both the league best and fairest and top goal kicker trophies courtesy of Robert Thomas.\n\nThe club’s most successful era to date was the late 1980s through to the mid ‘90s when the seniors claimed a total of six flags in nine seasons. On one occasion during this period they won an amazing 59 consecutive games. The fact that success permeated all levels of the club at this time is clearly evidenced by its feat in winning the club championship every year between 1987 and 1991.\n\nThe turn of the century saw the Panthers once again emerge as a force. In 1999, the last season of the CCAFL, they claimed their eighth senior flag with a grand final win over Killarney Vale, and backed this up the following year with a hefty 17.16 (118) to 10.18 (78) defeat of Cardiff in the inaugural Black Diamond AFL flag decider. There have been no further senior grade premierships since, but the club’s enviable tally of nine in just three decades confirms its status as the Central Coast region’s most successful club.
