Formed in 1886, Williamstown CYMS Football Club had played in a number of different competitions, notably the Footscray District Football League and the CYMS Football League, prior to joining the Victorian Amateur Football Association in 1984. The club’s tally of fourteen senior grade premierships up to that point was immediately added to thanks to a 19.10 (124) to 11.17 (83) C Section grand final win over Preston MBOB.
After a series of near misses the club, known as the Seagulls, finally claimed its second senior grade VAFA flag in 2009 in D2 Section. Opposed in the grand final by Peninsula the Williamstown team were steadier in front of goal in winning by 27 points, 15.9 (99) to 9.18 (72).
Between 2010 and 2014 the Seagulls competed in Division One, as D1 Section was renamed in 2010. They showed gradual improvement, qualifying for the finals in 2013, and then reaching the grand final the following year. Opposed by Therry Penola they dominated from the outset and ultimately triumphed by 56 points, 16.14 (110) to 8.6 (54). For the past tfour seasons the Seagulls have competed in Premier C, winning 7 matches in both 2015 and 2016 before qualifying for the finals in 2017 and 2018 when they finished fourth and third. The 2018 result was especially disappointing as the Seagulls had topped the ladder ahead of the finals but proved unable to go on with things.
