In 2009 the Bulldogs came desperately close to capturing their first senior grade flag for more than three decades when they went down by a single straight kick to Paringa after a thrilling, high scoring grand final. Final scores were Paringa 18.14 (122) defeated Wunkar 17.14 (116). It was the Bulldogs’ sixth losing grand final since they defeated Moorook Kingston by 27 points to claim the 1976 flag.\n\nThe original Wunkar Football Club existed between 1926 and 1971 when it amalgamated with East Murray Football League rival United. During that time it contested a total of fourteen grand finals of which half a dozen ended in victory. United meanwhile, which had been formed in 1928, had won nine of the twenty-five grand finals in which it had participated.
