Dodges Ferry spent the first twenty-three years of the its existence competing in the Tasman Football Association, where it won half a dozen senior grade premierships from eleven grand final appearances. The club’s reserves team also claimed six flags during this time.

After entering AFL Southern Tasmania’s Regional League in 2002 the Sharks became consistently competitive, and in 2006 they broke through for their first premiership courtesy of a 14.13 (97) to 13.9 (87) grand final defeat of Sorrell. In 2009 the SFL's Premier Division clubs departed to join the newly established Tasmanian State League, leaving nine clubs, including Dodges Ferry, to vie for SFL premiership honours. The closest the Sharks have come to achieving this was a losing grand final in 2010. Opposed by New Norfolk they went down with disappointing meekness by 72 points.

Recent seasons have seen the Sharks playing finals football in 2012, 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019, but struggling at other times, albeit without succumbing to the indignity of the wooden spoon. They enjoyed a particularly promising campaign in 2019 when they topped the ladder after the roster matches only to suffer the anti climax of a "straight sets" finals exit at the hands of Huonville Lions and Lindisfarne.
