Girgarre
In terms of senior grade premierships won Girgarre’s record might not be outstanding but the club has been a key member of the Kyabram District Football League since the competition’s inception, as the Kyabram District Football Association, in 1932. In recent years, however, the Kangaroos have struggled, with the seniors last contesting the finals in 2001, the reserves in 2003, and the under age team as long ago as 1998.
Girgarre first claimed a premiership in 1952, and for the next decade or so the side was a regular finalist. In 1963 the Roos reached the grand final, but lost to Tallygaroopna. The remainder of the 1960s proved unmemorable, but the ensuing decade brought four finals appearances and, in 1976, the club’s second flag.
During the 1980s Girgarre twice qualified for the grand final, defeating Tallygaroopna in 1983, but losing to Avenel six years later. The Roos remained as a force after this loss, however, and following a slight dip in fortunes in 1990 they returned to the winners’ rostrum in 1991 with a grand final triumph over Lancaster. This proved to be not only their last premiership but their last grand final appearance, and indeed only in 1996 (third) and 2001 (fifth) have the seniors contested the finals since.
