Macedon

A Macedon Football Club was competing in the Gisborne District Football Association as early as the first decade of the twentieth century. Complete records from this competition are not extant, but it is known that the club claimed at least one premiership by accounting for Sunbury by 8 points in the 1907 grand final.

Much of Macedon’s history has been spent competing in the Riddell District Football League but its overall record, measured in terms of winning premierships, is unremarkable. Indeed, the Cats' solitary success of the twentieth century was achieved in Division Two in 1976. Arguably heir best season came in 1978 when they reached the Division One grand final, only to lose to Gisborne. By the 1990s the club was in dire straits, and late in the 2000 season it went into recess. Three years later the club resumed, and if its on-field performances since have been undistinguished its off field achievement in recovering after seeming dead in the water warrants the highest commendation.

In recent seasons the Cats have been highly competitive in what is nowadays a single division competition. The 2016 season saw them qualify for the finals in second place only to suffer "straight sets" losses at the hands of Diggers Rest and Riddell to leave them in fourth position. A year later they finally broke through for a long overdue premiership. Top of the ladder at the end of the home and away rounds they progressed straight into the grand final on the strength of a 9.14 (68) to 8.8 (56) second semi final defeat of Diggers Rest. The grand final opposition came from Rupertswood, and after an evenly fought first half the Cats pulled away to record a reasonably comfortable triumph with scores of 11.14 (80) to 10.7 (67). Rupertswood kicked the last 2 goals of the encounter to give a deceptive closeness to the scoreline.

Macedon were again realistic premiership contenders in 2018 but they fell short by 2 points in their preliminary final clash with eventual premiers Diggers Rest.
