Match Report

The AFL's version of Groundhog Day played out once more on Easter Monday as Hawthorn gave up a 30-point lead just prior to half-time to again succumb to Geelong in another close finish between these two sides. The win represented Geelong's 10th in a row over Hawthorn, the Hawks not having beaten the Cats since the 2008 Grand Final. Eight of those wins have been by less than 10 points, and Hawthon have been in winning positions in more than a few of those matches.

Mondaya's match with Hawthorn getting an early jump with goals to Jordan Lewis, Luke Breust and Brent Guerra. Geelong also had opportunities during this period but could only manage five behinds before Billie Smedts kicked he Cats' first. David Hale marked an kicked a goal shortly before the first break and the Hawks changed ends leading by 16 points.

Both sides traded goals for much of the second term before Franklin and Isaac Smith kicked goals at the 22- and 24-minute marks to open up a 30-point lead for the Hawks. Hawthorn was in full control of the match at that point and their fans might have been forgiven for believing that the "curse" was about to be broken. But late goals to Travis Varcoe and Tom Hawkins would once again have seen the seeds of doubt amongst the entire Hawk fraternity and the lead was back to 20 points at the main break.

Almost inevitably, Geelong found another gear in the third term and goals to Mitch Duncan, Joel Selwood and Tom Hawkins suddenly found themselves within a point of the Hawks. A couple of behinds gave the Cats the lead and, amazingly, they were never headed again. Each side kicked two more goals for the term and the margin at the final break was two points in Geelong's favour.

Geelong got the early break of the last quarter when an errant Guerra kick-in found Allen Christensen who converted the goal. Goals to Podsiadly and Duncan in the next 10 minutes took Geelong's lead out to 21 points before Hawthorn mounted one final challenge. A snap-goal from a clearance to Breust was followed by another from Shane Savage and the Hawk were back within eight points. Breust managed another behind but the clock beat Hawthorn, with the Cats victorious by seven points in another epic encounter between these two powerhouse sides.

Captain Joel Selwood excelled for the Cats, with Chapman and Mackie also excellent. For the Hawks Sam Mitchell, Brad Sewell and Grant Birchall all played fine games.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Alastair Clarkson (Haw): We did play well in the first half and we were probably a little bit unfortunate. I know the Cats kicked a little bit inaccurately early, but a lot of key stats we were in control of the game with. We could have gone into half-time a little bit further in front.

Chris Scott (Geel): I thought we played reasonable poorly in the first half. When the heat was on in the third quarter and we really needed some individuals to step up, I don't think we should discount Joel Selwood, who kind of reminded me of Gary Ablett the other night [for Gold Coast against St Kilda], when the game was on the line.

INJURIES
Hawthorn: Lake replaced in selected side by Bailey
Geelong: Rivers (knee)

SUBSTITUTES
Hawthorn: Hill replaced by Anderson in the third quarter
Geelong: Caddy replaced by Horlin-Smith in the fourth quarter
