Match Report

Port Adelaide has overcome a strong start from GWS to record its second consecutive strong win and maintain its perfect start to the 2013 season. In a fixture that was designated as a tribute match to John McCarthy, the former Port Adelaide player who died in a tragic fall at the players' post-season trip at Los Vegas last year, the Power turned an 11-point quarter-time deficit into a convincing 56-point win.

The Giants began the match in strong fashion, with early goals to Dylan Shiel and Jonathan Giles, before Cameron O'Shea got one back for Port. But the Giants continued to run and attack the ball with ferocity, and when Jeremy Cameron goaled at the 17-minute mark and again three minutes later, GWS had opened up a 19-point break and things were not looking good for the Power. But Chad Wingard took a goal-square mark just before the quarter-time siren, and converted for a goal, meaning the margin at the first break was a manageable 11 points.

When the second term began Port gradually began to work themselves into the match. A lucky goal to Travis Boak was followed by another from Jay Schulz after a diving mark and the Power took the lead, one that they would not relinquish. They kicked the next four goals to jump to a 27-point lead. Stephen Coniglio and Jonathon Patton managed goals just before half time to reduce to margin to 15 points at the long break but the Power appeared to have the edge.

Any chance the Giants had to put a stamp on the game was squandered in the opening minutes of the third quarter when three gettable shots at goal all went through for behinds. Although the game remained relatively even for the next 15 minutes, Port broke away to kick the last three goals of the third quarter to lead by 32 points at the final change.

Thwy went on with the job in the final term, kicking seven goals to three to win in very strong fashion. Justin Westhoff, with five goals and 25 possessions, played one of his best ever games for the Power, while Jeremy Cameron was among the best for the Giants.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Ken Hinkley (Port): A bit of credit should be given to the Giants. They were really good early. To out credit, we adjusted and got back in control of the game. We were a bit more aware [after quarter time] of their outside spread on us and we slowed them up a bit from what they were able to do early.

Kevin Sheedy (GWS): We were disappointed in a lot of efforts by our players who could have been a bit more physical at times when the ball was there to be won. Because in the first quarter we had had it, so you know that the talent's there and that the physicality can be there, too.

INJURIES
Port Adelaide: Hartlett (back), Schulz (ankle)
GWS: Nil

SUBSTITUTES
Port Adelaide: Kane Mitchell replaced Jay Schulz at three-quarter time
GWS: Will Hoskin-Elliott replaced Stephen Gilham in the third quarter

UMPIRES: Fila, Hay, Pannell
