Match Report

Fremantle has moved into the top four with a 90-point win over Melbourne at Subiaco on the Sunday afternoon. In a match that went largely to script, the Dockers strangled the life out of the Demon attack, restricting them to just a goal in each of the first two quarters, while kicking seven and six of their own respectively.

Melbourne recovered to an extent in the third quarter, restricting the Dockers to only two goals while kicking three of their own. But normal service resumed in the last quarter, the Demons once again being restricted to a solitary goal while Fremantle kicked another four.

The winning margin was enough to tip the Dockers into the top four at the expense of Sydney, who'd had a big win of their own against Collingwood on Friday night, by 47 points.

David Munday was a fine player for the Dockers, gathering 34 touches and kicking a goal, and he received great support from Nat Fyfe, Michael Barlow and Danyle Pearce, each of whom also collected 30 possessions or more. The standout player for Melbourne was Jeremy Howe, who kicked two goals and had 27 touches. Jack Trengove (two goals, 20 possessions) and Nathan Jones (20 disposals, one goal) also flew the flag for Melbourne.

Meanwhile, the rumours abounding about Demon coach Mark Neeld's hold on his tenure at the club. With Melbourne 17th on the ladder with a dismal 1-8 record, many believe that a decision by the Melbourne board to terminate his services is imminent. Things will not get any easier for Neeld, with the Demons to face Hawthorn and Collingwood over the next two rounds ahead of their mid-year bye.

Fremantle on the other hand will have a chance to consolidate their top-four spot over the next month, with games against Adelaide, Brisbane and North Melbourne on either side of their bye.

COACHES' COMMENTS:
Ross Lyon (Frem): We spoke at half time about keeping the standards really high and doing the basics really well but human nature is, once you get a bit comfortable you tend to back off. To Melbourne's credit, I thought they lifted their intensity [in the third quarter], ran harder and threw some challenges at us. I thought our last quarter, despite some sloppiness, was quite a dominant quarter again.

Mark Neeld (Melb): We came up against a well-oiled, well-drilled side and we were overwhelmed with their pressure in the first half. We're not sitting around having a look at our player list going 'oh, we've got to cull this many players'. This is the group that will take the football club through.
