Match Report

It was a day of milestones for St Kilda, with Nick Riewoldt and Nick Dal Santo both playing their 250th games. The day was full of celebration for both players, with the Saints overcoming the Demons by 35 points on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints kicking the first three goals in the opening four minutes was not a good start for new interim Demon coach Neil Craig. It was not until the six-minute mark that Melbourne found their first goal, coming through young talent in Dean Kent.

Jack Watts got the fire starting for Melbourne, kicking a few late goals in the second term giving the Demons a slight sniff. However St Kilda’s five-goal-to-two third quarter was enough to quell the gutsy Demons, and they took a 49-point lead heading into the last term. Despite Melbourne’s hard work in the last quarter, it wasn’t enough, with the Saints coming away victorious by 35 points.

Leigh Montagna starred for St.Kilda gathering 35 disposals and kicking a goal. He received good support from Jack Steven (30 disposals) and Farren Ray (29 disposals and two goals), both of whom were also terrific. Colin Garland (28 disposals) stood out for Melbourne, running off half back and setting up play, whilst Nathan Jones (23 disposals and one goal) and Spencer (15 disposals and 27 hit outs) also held their own.

Both teams can take confidence out of the end result, with Melbourne starting to show signs of improvement, with two potentially winnable games (against Western Bulldogs and Brisbane) coming up and St Kilda showing it has what it takes to get off to a flying start, although it will find its next two games (Richmond and Fremantle) a greater challenge.

COACHES’ COMMENTS
Neil Craig (Melb): We’re not competitive in real terms of where the competition is. We'll keep working hard. We need to get out standard up. In the first quarter the contested ball was minus 17 and that's not going to get you close. We have to tidy up our execution. We're not competitive with that.

Scott Watters (StK): We've got a terrific playing group. We've got a great group of leaders so we asked them for a fast start, an aggressive start, and we knew that contested ball was going to be an absolute key focus early in the game when both clubs have had the weeks that they've had.

INJURIES
St Kilda: Fisher (foot), replaced in selected side by Murdoch; McEvoy (concussion)
Melbourne: Nil

SUBSTITUTES
St Kilda: Ben McEvoy subbed out for Jimmy Webster in the third quarter
Melbourne: Chris Dawes (ill) subbed out for Daniel Nicholson in the fourth quarter

REPORTS
St Kilda: Nil
Melbourne: Spencer reported for head-high frontal contact against McEvoy in the second quarter

UMPIRES: Dalgleish, Ryan, McInerney
