Match Report

Carlton's chances of September action remain alive after the Blues comfortably accounted for St Kilda at Docklands stadium on Saturday night.

After an even first quarter, St Kilda briefly gained ascendency early in the second term when Jack Steven ran into an open goal to give the Saints an eight-point lead. But Marc Murphy, sporting a helmet in his return match from a broken jaw answered quickly for Carlton, and when Zac Tuohy kicked his first at the seven-minute mark, the Blues took the lead, one which they would not relinquish for the remainder of the match.

From that point, the Blues gradually got on top, establishing a nine-point lead at half time, increasing that to 11 points at three-quarter time, and then putting their feet to the pedal in the last quarter and running out 36-point victors.

The win was a welcome relief for coach Mick Malthouse and Carlton fans alike, after the Blues had dropped consecutive matches to Essendon, Sydney, Hawthorn and Collingwood, and it keeps the team within a game of eight-placed Port Adelaide.

Architects of the victory were Chris Judd (26 possessions, one goal), Kade Simpson (28 disposals) and Lachie Henderson (four goals and 16 touches). For St Kilda, the best players were Lenny Hayes (28 disposals), David Armitage (25 possessions) and Farren Ray (25 touches).

With just three wins to their name, the Saints are having a far more barren season than most pundits would have forecast prior to the season's beginning. They will attempt to attain their fourth victory this Saturday night when they take on the faltering Port Adelaide at Docklands.
