Match Report

Sydney has crushed the Greater Western Giants in the fourth Sydney Derby at the SCG on Sunday afternoon. The Swans emphasised the yawning chasm that exists between the league's reigning premier and a fledgling side in just its second season by comprehensively outplaying GWS in all four quarters to run out victors by a massive 129 points.

The margin was the third-largest seem this year, and it could have been greater had not John Longmire's men been so wayward in front of goal. The Swans finished the kicking 24.27. A straighter-kicking performance may have seen the all-time greatest margin (190 points) under threat.

The Swans had winners all over the ground but the outstanding players were Jarrad McVeigh (35 disposals), Nick Malceski (30 possessions and a goal) and Josh Kennedy (two goals and 29 touches). For GWS, captain Callan Ward (23 possessions), Jeremy Cameron (three goals and 16 touches) and Adam Treloar (25 touches) were tireless contributors.

Sydney's win keeps it in the top four and the magnitude of it has given the Swans a huge percentage boost. Sydney has 46 points and a percentage of 142, 16 points clear of fifth-placed Fremantle, who will have their chance to play the Giants in round 20. The Swans next match is against West Coast at Subiaco on Sunday afternoon.

Greater Western Sydney on the other hand remain without a win in 2013 and that is unlikely to change when they take on Essendon at home next Saturday. The Giants best chance of notching up a win this season will probably in round 19 when they meet Melbourne. The last time a team went through a season without a win was 1964, when Fitzroy failed to register a victory.
