Match Report

A much-improved effort from GWS has seen the Giants push Essendon until well into the third quarter before eventually succumbing to the Bombers by 39 points at the Sydney Showground on Saturday afternoon.

After having gone down to Sydney by 129 points a week earlier, there were fears the Giants would suffer a defeat of similar magnitude against another top four side in Essendon but Kevin Sheedy's men - in what is likely to be his last outing as coach against the Bombers - played spirited football throughout the match, managing to be within 11 points of the Dons as late as 20 minutes into the game's third quarter.

As would be expected of a far more experienced side, the Bombers pulled away to kick seven of the last nine goals of the match but Giants' fans would have been pleased with the four-quarter effort of their team.

Jake Melksham (23 possessions, two goals), Brent Stanton (23 disposals, two goals) and Travis Colyer (four goals and 16 touches) played great games for the Bombers, while Jeremy Cameron (four goals, five behinds), Adam Tomlinson (23 touches and a goal) and Jonathan Giles (four goals and 27 hitouts) were very good for the Giants.

Essendon finds itself unexpectedly in second place on the ladder after Geelong's shock loss to Adelaide, and the Bombers face top-placed Hawthorn at Docklands stadium this Friday night. The Giants, who are still searching for their first win of season 2013, will take on Collingwood, who also suffered a shock loss (to Gold Coast) last Saturday, at the MCG in this Saturday's twilight match.
