Match Report

With scores level at 4.1.25 apiece at quarter time at Kardinia Park on Saturday night, not many at the ground actually expected St Kilda to continue to keep pace with Geelong for the remainder of the evening. But it's probably fair to say that far fewer expected the Cat onslaught that was to follow over the next three quarters.

The Cats completed dried up all of St Kilda's avenues to goal, to the extent the Saints scored only one goal in the second quarter, and none whatsoever through the entire second half. Geelong in the meantime, as well as preventing St Kilda from getting anywhere near their goals, went on a scoring rampage, kicking 8.4 in the second quarter, 4.4 in the third and another 5.2 in the last. The final margin was 101 points, an unthinkable gap at the first change of ends.

Geelong's teamwork and precision were almost scarily good, and would no doubt have given the other top four coaches pause for thought. There seems little doubt that the Cats at their best are every chance of taking home a fourth flag in seven years. While virtually the entire Geelong team was in peak form, the best of the best included Steven Motlop (four goals and 29 touches), Tom Hawkins (five goals) and captain Joel Selwood (three goals and 32 disposals).

For the Saints, Jack Steven (36 disposals), Leigh Montagna (34 touches and a goal) and Clint Jones (27 possessions) never stopped trying.

The win enabled Geelong, who will take on North Melbourne at Docklands on Friday night, to regain a place in the top two. St Kilda, languishing in 16th place on the ladder with just two wins, will take on Brisbane at the Gabba next Saturday night.
