Match Report

North Melbourne remains a theoretical chance of competing in the 2013 finals after it condemned Essendon to a fourth consecutive loss at Docklands stadium in Saturday's twilight match.

After a relatively even first quarter, the Kangaroos gradually got on top of the Bombers in the second term, then broke right away in the third term with a six-goal-to-two burst and did just enough to outscore the Dons in the final term, winning the match by 45 points.

Architects of North's victory included Levi Greenwood (36 possessions), Lachie Hansen (24 disposals) and Daniel Wells (four goals and 17 touches), while for Essendon, Jake Melksham (three goals and 19 touches), Michael Hibberd (26 disposals) and skipper Jobe Watson (31 possessions) did everything they could to stay in the match.

While North are three games away from eighth place on the ladder with just two games to play, they remain a chance of September action because the possibility of Essendon losing premiership points still remains. The Kangaroos would need to beat Hawthorn in round 22 and Collingwood in the final round to sneak into the finals that way.

Essendon has now lost four consecutive matches and, even if it is not stripped of its points, it's hard to see the Bombers having any impact in September. They will play Carlton at the MCG on Saturday night and Richmond at the same venue in round 22. The club will finish somewhere between fifth and eighth on the ladder, depending on the outcome of those two matches.
