Match Report

Brisbane calmly put aside the dram of having sacked its coach during the week to comfortably account for Greater Western Sydney at the 'Gabba on Saturday night.

Having said goodbye to favourite son Michael Voss just five days earlier, the Lions, with assistant coach Mark Harvey at the helm, kicked five goals to one in the first term to open up a 28-point quarter-time lead, then powered ahead in the second quarter, kicking seven goals to two to put the game beyond doubt by the long break.

Brsibane continued apace in the third term, kicking another four goals to one but eased down in the last quarter, allowing the Giants to kick five goals to two to reduce the final margin to an even 10 goals.

Simon Black, in his 322nd game for the Lions, was at his brilliant best, gathering 28 possessions, while Same Mayes (4.3 and 21 disposals) and Daniel Rich (two goals and 20 touches) were also excellent contributors. The Giants' best were Stephen Coniglio (28 disposals and a goal), Adam Treloar (27 possessions) and Toby Greene (31 touches and a goal).

The Lions still have - in theory at least - an outside chance of playing finals football in 2013. They would need Essendon to have their premiership points stripped away, have several other results fall their way, and defeat the Western Bulldogs at home and Geelong at Kardinia Park for the scenario to come to pass.

Meanwhile GWS, anchored to the bottom of the ladder with just one win, will try and avoid the wooden spoon by winning at least one of its final two games, against Richmond at home next Sunday and Gold Coast at Carrara in round 23.
