Match Report

Sydney has defeated a plucky St Kilda to maintain its hold on third place on the ladder and keep alive its hopes of a top-two finish and hosting a final in the first week of September action. The two sides appeared very even for the first half of the match, with the Swans just eking clear at half-time courtesy of late second quarter goals to Kurt Tippett and Jed Lamb.

The Swans then put the pedal to the metal in the second half, kicking 12 goals to the young Saints' four to run out winners by a comfortable 59 points.

For the Saints, the game followed a similar pattern to most of their recent matches. They have been able to keep in touch with quality sides for a quarter or two, and then faded away quite rapidly in the second half. While this would seem to be a concerning trend on the face of it, it is likely a reflection of the number of young players St Kilda has been blooding this year. Youngsters such as Tom Curren, Tom Lee, Tom Hickey, Darren Minchington, Josh Saunders and the like will be able to have greater impact for longer periods as their bodies get used to the rigours of 120 minutes of AFL football.

The Swans' victory was set up by Josh Kennedy, who had a game-high 38 disposals, Luke Parker (27 possessions) and Rhys Shaw (24 touches off a half-back line) and finished off by the efforts of Kurt Tippett (five goals) and Jesse White (three goals). Meanwhile Jack Steven continued his fine season for the Saints, gathering 35 touches and kicking two goals. Tom Curren (20 disposals and a goal) and veteran skipper Nick Riewoldt (two goals and 22 possessions) also played great games.

While Sydney remains in the race for the top two, it will have to work hard in the final fortnight of the home-and-away season to make it there. The Swans will take on Geelong at Kardinia Park next Saturday and then host Hawthorn in a final-round match at Stadium Australia.

St Kilda, which has been stuck on three wins since round 13, will be hoping to add to that tally when they take on Gold Coast next Sunday. The Saints' final match will be against Fremantle at Docklands stadium.
