Match Report

Collingwood tuned up for September with a big win over a disappointing West Coast at the MCG on Friday night. The Magpies set the tone of the match with an eight goal to two first quarter, then strangled the life out of the Eagles' attack for the rest of the match to coast to a 62-point win.

The win was set up by first-season dynamo Josh Thomas, in just his 17th game of AFL footy. Thomas had 35 possessions and kicked a goal, while the old Magpie firm of Dane Swan and Scott Pendlebury also dominated. Swan racked up 34 touches and kicked two goals, while Pendlebury had 37 possessions.

It was a tale of woe for the Eagles, who kicked just five goals for the match. Matt Rosa (37 possessions), Matt Priddis (32 touches) and Scott Selwood (33 disposals) did their best to keep West Coast in the match but was all too little.

With 14 wins, Collingwood moves into fifth place and have virtually guaranteed themselves a home final in the first week. The Magpies' final home and away match will be against North Melbourne at the MCG next Sunday.

For West Coast, any vague hope of a back-door entry into the finals (via Essendon's loss of premiership points) disappeared with the defeat. The Eagles will look to salvage some pride with a last round home win over Adelaide, but regardless of the result in that game, there will be some off-season soul-search at the club, which was tipped by many pundits to make the top four in 2013. Coach John Worsfold has indicated he would like to continue in the role next year but Eagles' CEO said that, while it was still the most likely outcome, there was no guarantee that Worsfold would remain at the helm in 2014.
