Match Report

The season may only be three weeks old but if we see many more games better than the epic struggled played out between North Melbourne and Port Adelaide on Saturday night then we are in for a fantastic year of footy in 2015. The two sides played out a tough, hard-running game of football, with the lead changing several times before the Power found themselves eight points to the good when the final siren sounded. The result left both teams with a 1-2 record, but it will be a surprise if the two sides don’t figure heavily in finals calculations come September.

An even affair played out in the first quarter with the two sides trading goals. Matt White, Brad Ebert and Angus Monfries kicked majors for Port while Lindsay Thomas and Ben Brown did the same for North, leaving the Power nine points ahead at quarter time. The Roos lost Ziebell during the term, a heavy clash with Olliw Wines, forcing him to be subbed out with bruised lungs.

North made the early running in the second term, with a Lindsay Thomas behind followed by goals to Ryan Bastinac and Brown, giving the Kangas a four-point lead. But Port hit back with goals to Jay Schulz and White before Sam Gbson pulled one back for the Roos, leaving the Power two points to the good as the quarter entered time on. That time-on period belong entirely to Port, goals to Jasper Pittard, Ebert and Schulz giving the Power a 20-point half-time buffer.

The Kangaroos needed to start the second half well and they did so emphatically. After Shaun Higgin’s opening goal of the term was matched by Port’s Chad Wingard, North slammed on four goals in eight minutes, through Drew Petrie, Robin Nahas, Brown and Robbie Tarrant to reclaim the lead. The Power then stemmed the flow and kicked three of the next four goals to reassert its authority and take an eight-point lead into the last change of ends.

Within the first minute of the final term, Mason Wood, in just his third game for North, goaled to reduce the difference to just two points but the Power took the initiative again, with Ebert and Schulz kicking majors before Thomas cut the margin back to nine. Matthew Broadbent made it 15 at the 13-minute mark but North Melbourne came once more and a goal to Petrie was followed by Thomas’ third and fourth and the Roos were suddenly four points ahead with the quarter in time on. Port, however, would not buckle, and Aaron Young restored a two-point lead for the Power before a last minute major to Kane Mitchell gave them a thrilling eight-point victory.

Port’s best players included Brad Ebert (three goals and 22 touches), Broadbent (24 disposals, eight marks) and Schulz (four goals and six tackles), while for North, captain Andrew Swallow (30 possessions and 10 tackles), Sam Gibson (28 disposals and five marks) and Luke McDonald (28 touches) could all hold their heads high in defeat.

Both sides will be looking for their second win of the season in round four, Port at home against Hawthorn on Saturday night, and North against Geelong at Kardinia Park next Sunday.
