Match Report

Showdown 38 did not produce the grandstand finish that some recent Adelaide versus Port Adelaide clashes have produced but it was nevertheless a typically entertaining affair with the Power ultimately victorious by four goals at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday. Port won the match relatively comfortable in the end, despite having an amazing 29 fewer inside-50 entries. It was the second week in a row that the Power had lost that stat and still won the match. The Crows had more scoring shots but did not help their cause by kicking 13.13 while Port registered an accurate 18.7.

Adelaide was the frontrunner early in the match, with Eddie Betts in fine form. He kicked two goals in the first seven minutes as the Crows took a 12-point lead. Port then hit its straps and goals to Jay Schulz, Hamish Hartlett and Schulz again saw the Power lead by a goal as the quarter entered time on. Further majors were added by Robbie Gray and skipper Travis Boak and Port Adelaide took a 15-point lead into the quarter-time huddle.

Justin Westhoff goaled within the first 28 seconds of the start of the second term to put Port 22 points clear but the match became a defensive affair for the remainder of the quarter. Schulz extended the lead to 26 with a major at the 10-minute mark and it was to be 24 minutes into the quarter before Adelaide finally kicked its third goal, the first to Taylor Walker after he marked a short pass from Tom Lynch. Chad Wingard responded almost immediately for the Power but a third goal to Betts just before half time saw the Crows close the gap to a not insurmountable 17 points at the long break.

As it had in the second quarter, Port Adelaide goaled within the first minute of the third term, through Paddy Ryder but the Crows then hit back hard. Betts kicked his fourth and, when Lynch and Josh Jenkins added another brace of goals, Adelaide was within five points just seven minutes into the term. The Power regained their composure over the next 12 minutes, kicking 2.2 it one behind - the goals going to Schulz and Hartlett - to re-establish a three goal buffer at the 17-minute mark. The Crows added a further two goals to one to end the term and were within 13 points at the last change ofd ends.

After a behind by Port to start the last quarter, Scott Thompson reduced that difference to just eight with a wonderful snap at the three-minute mark but the Power responded with two goals to Kane Mitchell to restore a 20-point advantage. Jenkins pulled one back for the Crows but Ryder kept them at bay with his third at the 13-minute mark. Thompson kicked another great goal to minutes later but Schulz, Westhoff and Wingard registered three majors on the trot to extend the difference to 31 points and put the game beyond doubt. Crow Tom Lynch scored the last goal of the match but Port Adelaide finished comfortable 24-point winners.

Best for Port included Robbie Gray (32 touches and a goal), Boak (33 disposals, three tackles) and Brad Ebert (31 possessions, nine marks), while Adelaide was well served by Patrick Dangerfield (36 touches and seven tackles), Eddie Betts (five goals, seven marks) and Thompson (27 disposals, six marks).

The win saw Port climb to 10th on the ladder and the Power will be looking for a fourth win in a row when they meet West Coast at the Adelaide Oval next Sunday. The Crows have slipped from first to seventh with two losses in a row. They will look to arrest that slide with a win over Gold Coast at Carrara on Saturday.
