Match Report

To twist a famous proverb, "Hell hath no fury like a Hawthorn scorned", and Saturday the Hawks, perhaps feeling scorned after their loss at the hands of GWS a week earlier (their first loss in history to the Giants), came out with all guns blazing on Saturday and put hapless Melbourne to the sword. Hawthorn showed the Demons until late in the match, easily winning all four quarters at the MCG to thrash Melbourne to the tune of 105 points.

Melbourne had a very brief window of glory against the Hawks, with Jeff Garlett and Cam Pedersen scoring majors in the first four minutes if the match, giving the Demons a two-goal lead. But the rot set in very soon after that. Melbourne failed to score again for the quarter, and Ryan Schoenmakers, Cyril Rioli, David Hale (two), Jonathan Ceglar and Luke Breust combined to kick the next six goals and start a procession for Hawthorn that didn't really end until the final quarter entered time-on in the last quarter. At the first break, it was the Hawks by 26, looking ominous.

There was to be no let-ump for the Demons in the second term, although they did manage to restrict Hawthorn to four goals for the quarter, one each going to Rioli, Billy Hartung, Jarryd Roughead and Paul Puopolo as the Hawks continued to share the goals around. At the other end, though, Melbourne could manage just the one major for the term, Jeff Garlett kicking his second half way through the quarter and at the long break it was Hawthorn by 45 points.

The third term saw Hawthorn at its scary and ruthless best. After Will Langford and Sam Mitchell started the Hawks off with goals, Pedersen responded with his second but that was to prove the Demons' only respite until the siren sounded for three-quarter time. The Hawks rattled on six more goals in that period, one each to Schoenmakers, Langford, Matt Suckling, Roughead, Breust and Puopolo and it was Hawthorn a massive 86 points to the good at the final change.

The misery continued when the final term commenced for Melbourne. Breust, Jack Gunston and Cyril Rioli all kicked majors in the first 10 minutes to take Hawthorn's lead beyond 100 before Garlett chipped in for his second at the 11-minute mark. The Hawks then continued on their merry way, with goals to Roughead (two) and Brad Hill taking the margin out to 117 before two late goals to Pedersen and Rohan Bail finally finish 105 points adrift of Hawthorn.

Sam Mitchell (30 disposals, six tackles) was outstanding for the Hawks, as were Hartung (26 possessions and a goal) and Hill (24 touches, one goal), while Colin Garland (10 marks, 19 possessions) and Cam Pedersen (three goals, seven marks) were good for the Demons.

Hawthorn, sixth on the ladder with a 4-2 record and a very healthy percentage of 152.96, will host Sydney at the MCG next Saturday night in a replay of last year's Grand Final, while next up for Melbourne are the Western Bulldogs, at the same ground the next day.
