Match Report

After a four-game winning streak, Richmond's bubble has burst - for the moment at least - after the Tigers went down by 20 points to West Coast at the MCG on Friday night. The Eagles got on top with a four-goal burst in the third term after the game was in the balance at the long break after an evenly contested first half. That run of goals proved to be crucial, West Coast managing to hold the Tigers at bay for the remainder of the match.

The Eagles set the tone early in the match, and with goals to Mark LeCras and Josh Kennedy, led by 14 points after just six minutes. Richmond responded with majors to Dustin martin and Den Griffiths over the next 10 minutes, but a brace of goals to Nic Naitanui saw the West Coast back out to a 14-point lead at the 25-minute mark. Late goals to Martin and Anthony Miles evened up the contest and the margin was just one point in the Eagles' favour at quarter time.

Jack Darling scored the first major of the second quarter at the two-minute mark but Ty Vickery's first two minutes later saw the Tigers back within two points. As the pendulum continued to swing both ways, Jamie Cripps and Dom Sheed kicked the next two goals for the Eagles but Richmond closed out the quarter with three goals in time on - to Vickery, Martin an Trent Cotchin - and the Tigers took a slender three-point lead into the long break.

Richmond had taken the momentum into half time but when play resumed it was one-way traffic in the direction of the Eagles for the first 10 minutes. Cripps kicked a major after three minutes, Kennedy added two more over the next six minutes and then LeCras made it four in a row for West Coast to give the Eagles a crucial 23-point buffer. Brett Deledio pulled one back for Richmond after 13 minutes but Elliot Yeo answered soon after to restore the Eagles' 23-point advantage. The Tigers defended well in the second half of the term, keeping West Coast scoreless, and attacked heavily themselves, but their return was limited, with Jack Riewoldt kicking 1.2 and Brandon Ellis adding another behind. Richmond trailed by 14 points at the final turn, but the margin probably should have been narrower.

The final change of ends brought another turn of the tide, the Eagles dominating the first 15 minutes of the last quarter, hold Richmond scoreless and adding 1.3, the goal being kicked by Darling. Surprisingly, there were no further goals kicked for the match. The Tigers went forward on several occasions but these forays yielded only four behinds. Kennedy added another point for the Eagles in that period, and West Coast was 20 points to the good when the final siren sounded.

Naitanui was a standout for the victors, with 33 hitouts and two goals, with Andrew Gaff (31 disposals, six marks) also very good and defender Jeremy McGovern doing a fine job on Riewoldt. For the Tigers, Martin (31 touches, nine marks), Ellis (11 marks. 31 disposals) and Deledio (24 possessions and eight marks).

West Coast - second on the ladder with a 9-3 record - will have a bye in round 13, while on Friday night Richmond will take on Sydney at the SCG in a bid to maintain its hold on a place in the eight.
