Match Report

Only a week after defeating premiership favourite Hawthorn and seemingly establishing itself as a genuine top-four prospect, Richmond has succumbed to the Adelaide Crows at the Adelaide Oval on Friday night. The Crows, outside the eight and coming off a poor performance against Sydney, were not expected to trouble the Tigers but led throughout the night after quarter time to win by six goals. That margin actually flattered the Tigers, who managed just 8.4 against Adelaide's profligate 11.22.

Richmond started off well, with big Ivan Maric marking and kicking the first goal of the match. Goals proved hard to come by after that and it wasn't until the 19-minute mark that the match's second major was scored. It went to Tiger Shaun Grigg, putting Richmond nine points clear. Play opened up after that, with Charlie Cameron scoring Adelaide's first barely two minutes later. Brandon Ellis responded for the Tigers but the Crows closed the term with a goal to Tom Lynch and Richmond's quarter-time lead was only one point.

A behind to Taylor Walker squared the match six minutes into the second term, and when Walker was awarded a free kick two minutes later, he put the Crows six points ahead. Charlie Cameron's second two minutes later doubled that margin but Richmond scored the next two majors via Jack Riewoldt and Dustin Martin to level the scores once more at the 21-minute mark. A mark to Walker just before the half-time siren saw him take a kick after the bell. He kicked truly and Adelaide took a six-point lead into half time. It was a lead the Crows would not surrender.

The Crows were beset by goal-kicking yips in the third term. First Cameron, then Patrick Dangerfield missed, before a rushed behind was followed by misses to Brodie Smith and Lynch. Richmond finally got a scoring chance after that, and kicked accurately through Martin to cut the margin to six. It was time-on before Adelaide managed a major, with Jenkins marking and goaling to restore a two-goal lead. After a behind to Scott Thompson, Jenkins kicked his second and the lead was out to 19. Dangerfield added another goal at the 26-minute mark and the Crows lead had skipped out to 26 points at the last change.

Martin's third goal at the three-minute mark of the last term sparked thoughts of a Tiger comeback but Richmond couldn't manage a follow-up major and Eddie Betts' first goal saw the Crows ahead by 29 half way through the quarter. Ty Vickery juggled a mark and goaled at the 17-minute mark to cut the margin to 23 but that would be the Tigers' last hurrah, Adelaide scoring two further goals through David Mackay and Betts to run out winners by 36.

Best for the winners included Dangerfield (29 possessions, five tackles), Thompson (30 disposals and 10 tackles) and Sam Jacobs (38 hitouts, 14 touches) while Richmond was well served by Marin (three goals, 21 disposals) and Taylor Hunt (22 possessions, seven marks).

The loss saw the Tigers slip to seventh on the ladder, only half a game inside the eight. They will look to return to the winners list against Gold Coast at the MCG on Sunday. The Crows are only narrowly outside the eight on percentage and will be a big chance to move in if they can defeat Essendon at Docklands on Saturday.
