Match Report

The first match in this week's wrap takes us up Port Road as far as Woodville for the Battle of the Birds, the Eagles facing the Magpies at Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval. The Eagles have been flying as of late, not many have risen to challenge them since the Bloods back in Round 2. The Magpies found themselves in the Eagles' way back in Round 5 when they raided Alberton for a 17-point win, sweet revenge for their two losses to Port in the 2014 season which included their last stoush at Oval Avenue. The Magpies haven't had the best past three weeks, last weekend's narrow loss to reigning premier Norwood pouring further salt into the wounds after losing to Adelaide and then the Phil Walsh tragedy which saw their game against North postponed.

The Eagles peppered their goal early on, but they lacked the polish of their opponents who kicked 4.1 to 3.5 to lead by two points at the first change. A lacklustre second quarter saw a slight role reversal with the Magpies suddenly finding the big sticks harder put one through. They kicked four behinds, but the Eagles would only manage 1.3 so while the 'Pies were down by four points at the long break, they definitely were not out. From here it was the Magpie show, the Eagles found themselves exposed and under serious attack as the visitors kicked 5.3 to 2.2 to retake control by the three quarter-time break. At the final change, Port were ahead by 15 points. The Eagles would go on to cop only their second loss for the season, they could only score 1.3 as the Magpies added a further 5.5 to run out 41-point winners to the shock of the Eagles faithful.

Sam Gray was named best for Port, while the Eagles named Jared Petrenko as their best afield.
