Match Report

Collingwood's 2017 season remains alive after the Magpies recorded a solid if unspectacular win over the Brisbane Lions at the MCG on Sunday. The Pies overcame a fast start from Brisbane and a third-quarter challenge to finish strongly, kicking seven goals to three in the final term to win by 45 points and move up to 12th on the ladder, within a game of  a place in the top eight.

Brisbane got off to a good start with a lovely roving snap for goal by Dayne Zorko putting the Lions ahead after two minutes. The Pies had a chance to respond when a nice pass from Scott Pendlebury found Levi Greenwood, but Greenwood's shot missed and the resultant kick in ended up with Zorko at the other end. He goaled and the Lions were ahead by 12 points. From there Collingwood began to gain the ascendancy, and goals to Daniel Wells, Jamie Elliott, Elliott again and Adam Treloar saw the Pies claim a 14-point lead midway through the term. Brisbane hit back via goals to Dayne Beams and Eric Hipwood, but a late major to Wells had Collingwood ahead by eight points at quarter time.

A nice contested mark in the goal square from Darcy Moore saw him goal at the two-minute mark, giving Collingwood a 14-point lead, but the Lions responded soon after, with Dayne Beams snapping his second goal. From there, though, the Pies dominated the next 20 minutes, kicking 3.5 to nil, the goals going to Alex Fasolo, Jamie Elliott and Josh Smith, to jump 31 points clear before a late goal to Matthew Hammelmann had Brisbane back with 25 at the half.

As he had done in the second quarter, Darcy Moore opened the third term with a goal, extending Collingwood's lead to 31 points. The Magpies then had numerous opportunities to put the game beyond the reach of Brisbane, but added four consecutive behinds. With the door left ajar, the Lions came charging through, with majors to Rhys Mathieson, Dayne Beams, Jake Barrett and Daniel Rich cutting the deficit to just 10 points late in the term. A late goal to Lynden Dunn just before the three-quarter time siren gave the Pies some breathing space, the margin 16 points at 'orange' time.

Having kicked the last goal of the third quarter, the Magpies scored another almost as soon as the last term began, with Alex Fasolo kicking truly to extend their lead to 22 points. Fasolo then added two behinds before Brayden Maynard kicked another major to extend the lead to five goals. The Lions made one final challenge with consecutive majors to Jarrod Berry and Archie Smith, but it proved to be a last hurrah, and goals to Steele Sidebottom, Moore and Tim Broom head settled the result. The Pies added two of the final three goals as the game opened up in the finals minutes, and finished 45 points to the good.

Sidebottom (34 possessions, eight marks) and Pendlebury (31 touches and eight tackles) were fine contributors for the winners, while Brisbane's best included Zorko (28 disposals, seven tackles) and Dayne Beams (28 possessions, three goals).

Collingwood will have a chance to push closer to the top eight when it takes on Fremantle at Subiaco next Sunday, while the Lions will have round 11 off before also playing the Dockers at the Gabba on Saturday week.
