Match Report

Adelaide remains a theoretical chance of participating in this years finals after it easily accounted for Melbourne at its last ever match at Football Park on Saturday afternoon. The Crows would need an unlikely combination of results to their way in round 23, but its win, combined with Carlton's stunning loss to Essendon on Saturday night, means the dream remains alive if the AFL deems that the Bombers cannot partake of September action.

The Crows said goodbye to their home of 23 seasons in style, overcoming a slow start to kick 17 goals to five over the last three quarters, to register a 68-point thrashing of the Demons. The foundations of the win were laid by veteran Scott Thompson, who returned to his best with 33 possessions and a goal, Brad Crouch (31 disposals) and Lewis Johnston, who kicked 6.2 in just his seventh AFL match,

Predictably, Melbourne's best player was Nathan Jones. Jones, who picked up 23 touches on Saturday, has been one of the few shining lights in what has been a very dark Demon season. First year players Jimmy Toumpas (22 disposals) and Dean Terlich (20 disposals) were also positives on Saturday.

Adelaide's unlikely dream scenario will require the Crows to beat West Coast at Subiaco next Saturday night, a result that is not out of the question, given the Eagles' relatively poor home record this season.

Melbourne will sign off from a miserable season with a final round match against the improving Western Bulldogs. The Demons will give themselves some hope of finishing the season on a high note, given that they defeated the Dogs by three points in round 13.
