Match Report

An inaccurate Carlton has done enough to defeat a plucky Brisbane by 13 points at the 'Gabba on Saturday night to sneak back into the top eight.

The Blues opened the match brightly, kicking six goals to Brisbane's three in the first quarter to set up a 22-point lead at the first change. But the Lions struck back strongly in the second term, kicking six goals of their own, while holding Carlton to just two. The Lions took a three-point lead into the long break.

Carlton played a very strong third term, with goals to captain Marc Murphy, Jarrad Waite, Kane Lucas and Dennis Armfield setting up a 15-point buffer at the final change of ends. The Blues should have put the game beyond doubt by half way through the final term, but missed a number of very gettable shots a goal, and when Brisbane's Pearce Hanley goaled at the 16-minute mark, there was a fear in the Carlton camp that the game could slip away. But the Blues, despite missing three further shots, held the Lions at bay to record a narrow victory.

Brock McLean was outstanding for the Blues, with 25 disposals, as were Jarrad Waite (3.3) and Murphy (22 disposals and a goal). For the Lions, Pearce Hanley (19 possessions, one goal) was excellent and he was ably supported by Rohan Bewick (three goals) and Simon Black (22 disposals).

Carlton will have a chance to cement their spot in the top eight when they take on GWS at Docklands on Saturday, while Brisbane will return to the 'Gabba to host Collingwood this Friday night.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Michael Voss (Bris): I don't know that it was one that got away. I think Carlton probably deserved their victory. It would have been one we'd stolen [had we won]. For three quarters at the very least, they seemed to get on top in most areas.

Mick Malthouse (Carl): We need to analyse what we did right and, not pat ourselves on the back, but try to emulate it. It [poor kicking for goal] will bite us one day if we don't do something about it. We've missed too many over the last two or three weeks from positions where you should just kick goals.

INJURIES
Brisbane: Leuenberger (finger)
Carlton: McLean (suspected concussion)

SUBSTITUTES
Brisbane: Josh Green on for Ashley McGrath in the third quarter
Carlton: Josh Bootsma on for Simon White in the third quarter

UMPIRES: Chamberlain, Armstrong and Jeffery
