Brisbane was not expected to pose a threat to Fremantle in its match at the Gabba on Saturday and it did not, with the Dockers leading comfortably at every change of ends and winning ultimately by 58 points.
The Dockers set the tone of the match early and could have been further ahead at quarter time had it not been for some errant kicking at goal. They led the Lions 4.8 to 0.4 at the first break. Fremantle straightened up in the second term, kicking 5.2 to 2.1 and at the long break, the Dockers were 47 points clear. Brisbane stemmed the tide in the third quarter, restricting the Dockers to just 1.3 while adding 2.3 of its own and at the final change the lead had been cut, albeit very slightly to 41 points. But the Dockers kicked clear again in the final term, adding another five goals to two to emerge victorious by almost 10 goals.
David Mundy played an outstanding game for Fremantle, with 24 possessions and two goals, while Lachie Neale (26 disposals, seven marks) and Ryan Crowley were also very good. For the Lions, Tommy Rockliff played another brilliant match, gathering 45 disposals and laying eight tackles. Stefan Martin (28 hitous, 19 possessions) and Lewis Taylor (26 touches and seven marks) were also excellent.
Fremantle retains fourth place on the ladder with the win, and will remain there if it accounts for Port Adelaide at Subiaco next Saturday. The Lions are 15th with seven wins and will see out 2014 with a trip to Kardinia Park to take on Geelong next Saturday night.
