Match Report

Carlton kept their slim finals chances alive with a workmanlike win over the Brisbane Lions at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night. After encountering some dogged resistance from the Lions in the first half, the more experienced and polished Blues outfit put the foot down in the second half, kicking 11 goals to six to run out comfortable 36-point victors. Brisbane raced out of the blocks, kicking the first two goals of the match and their quarter-time lead of four points could have been greater, but for some gettable missed shots at goal. Led by Bryce Gibbs (33 disposals and a goal) and the evergreen Heath Scotland (32 touches), the Blues began to assert some authority in the second term, kicking away to a 14-point lead as they entered time-on. A goal just before half-time to Josh Green kept the Lions within striking distance at the main break, but Carlton played a good old fashioned premiership third quarter, booting seven goals to Brisbane's one, putting the result beyond doubt.

Brisbane were far from disgraced, and finished the game with only one less scoring shot than the Blues, but couldn't finish off the good work of Jack Redden and Pearce Hanley. With games to come against Essendon, Gold Coast and St Kilda, the Blues would give themselves some chance of sneaking into the eight if they were to emerge victorious from all three. The Lions, with home games against Adelaide and the Bulldogs to come, along with an away fixture against Port Adelaide, will be looking to finish off 2012 on a relatively positive note.

Brett Ratten: It was about getting our hands back on the footy (in the second half) and we did that.

Michael Voss: We didn't make the most of our opportunities in the first quarter. They had momentum in the third (quarter) and they made every bit count.
