Match Report

After shooting into premiership favoritism early in the season, Carlton’s campaign had stuttered going into this match. Consecutive losses to Adelaide and St Kilda and the loss of star midfielder Marc Murphy had many in the football world questioning whether this Blues side was up to the task of breaking their 17-year premiership drought. A shaky win against bottom-placed Melbourne didn’t change too many people’s opinions, but it was a start. Small forward Eddie Betts was back in form with five goals, while tough midfielder Mitch Robinson (three goals) proved to be important. The Demons remained winless, but their first-half was a marked improvement on previous performance. Melbourne took a one-point lead into quarter time and was in striking distance of an upset win at half time. But they faded badly in the second half, kicking just the one-goal as they went down by 58 points. Demons co-captain Jack Grimes was terrific all day, while former Lion Mitch Clark battled hard up forward, kicking three goals.

COACHES COMMENTS
Brett Ratten (Carl): I thought the four players (Mitch Robinson, Brock McLean, David Ellard and Chris Judd) that played around the ball were outstanding all day. I thought their contested ball and their clearance work was really good. We concentrated on areas that we needed to improve on, and they were a physical part of the game. So we weren't shying away from it.

Mark Neeld (Melb): I wasn't disappointed with our work rate," Neeld said. "I thought as a group we worked pretty hard and we were quite happy with the style of footy we played for the most part. We got in an arm-wrestle for three quarters and we could not go with Carlton in the last quarter.

Umpires: Fleer, Nicholls, Ryan
