Match Report

Carlton's season is almost back on track and West Coast's almost at the point of derailment after the Blues won a thrilling encounter against the Eagles at Docklands on Saturday by just three points. In a see-sawing affair Carlton made all the early running before being reeled in by the Eagles, with West Coast then taking control of the match in the first half of the last quarter. But just when all hope looked gone for Carlton, a late flurry of goals saw the Blues snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in the dying moments of the game.

The Blues started like a house on fire and had four goals on the board via Jarrad Waite (two), Robbie Warnock and Mitch Robinson by half way through the first term. But the Eagles settled and kicked four of their own through Luke Shuey (two), Scott Lycett and Jamie Cripps to square up the match by quart time.

An even affair ensued in the second term, the Blues leading by just five points at the long break. But the Eagles began to assert themselves in the third quarter, kicking four goals to just one for the Blues, and led by 14 at the final change. They then dominated proceedings in the early stages of the last term and probably should have put the game beyond doubt. But Dom Sheed was the only one to kick straight at goal, with two shots by Matt Rosa and one by Cripps missing their mark.

Trailing by 24 points at the 14-minute mark, the Blues then made their move. Garlett marked an goaled to cut the lead to 18 points and then Zach Tuohy marked and, aided by a 50-metre penalty courtesy of a late tackle, converted to reduce the Eagles advantage to 12. Just before time on Lachie Henderson kicked his second of the match and the Blues trailed by just a goal with the momentum swinging their way. Young Dylan Buckley snapped another a minute later to level the scores before another Blue youngster, Troy Menzel, put the Blues ahead with a running goal at the 24-minute mark.

Having lost its lead, West Coast suddenly began to attack but missed three late shots at goal - two hitting the post - any one of which would have given the Eagles victory. But the Blued held on in a thriller to the delight of their fans and, after losing their first four games, have now won two on the trot. By contrast the Eagles, who had won their first three games, have dropped the next three and come back to the field.

Carlton will look to build on that momentum when it takes on arch-rival Collingwood in an MCG blockbuster on Friday night, while the Eagles will try and stop the rot in the Perth Derby against Fremantle on Sunday.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Mick Malthouse (Carl): I thought it was a very gutsy win, all up. We lost six players from last week, all injured, all can go through the middle. So, you have to change everything up, and the boys accepted that. I thought it was it was one of the better wins I've been associated with. When I see where we were before the match, where we were during the match and how we ended up, that to me is a good growth game.

Adam Simpson (WCo): We fought really hard to get back in the game and then to get a lead like that and not to ice the game is really disappointing. We just didn't take our opportunities. We had a chance in the last few minutes as well, might have kicked three or four points - two or three from the goals square - so that was disappointing. It was not just the goal-kicking though. In the contested ball we got done. There's some other things there that we need to address.
