Match Report

Grand Final rematches always have something extra to them, but this game proved to be something else. Collingwood lost three games in 2011 (all to Geelong) including the Grand Final, so this was always going to be fierce encounter. Although the Cats had great history over the Magpies, they still had plenty to prove after being smashed by Adelaide a week earlier. Many in the media questioned whether Geelong’s golden run had finally come to an end. It looked that way when Collingwood pulled away to a 24-point lead early in the last quarter. But the Cats wouldn’t go down without a fight. Cats star midfielders Jimmy Bartel and Joel Selwood were pivotal in the revival. Another Cats miracle looked likely when Matt Stokes leveled the scores with less than two minutes remaining. But a contentious umpiring decision to award Collingwood’s Alex Fasolo a 50-metre penalty gave the Magpies the lead that they never relinquished. Scott Pendlebury (30 possessions and four goals) was simply outstanding for Collingwood, playing a near-perfect game.

COACHES COMMENTS
Nathan Buckley (Coll): You know how dangerous a side like Geelong can be when you turn the ball over in that part of the ground. They've got the width of the wings, they've got enough room between their own goals to find some depth as well.

Chris Scott (Geel): I don't think it's fair on the opposition to say that we should have won it, but we were supremely confident in the box and I think the boys were as well. It just didn't go our way. We lost the crucial contests at the wrong time. But I thought in that last quarter we just dominated. I mean, 23 inside 50s in a quarter of footy is a domination.

Umpires: Stevic, Meredith, Findlay
