Match Report

Many thought this contest could be a Grand Final preview. If it was, Collingwood has a lot of work to do. They were completely blown away by a fired up Hawthorn side that could have won by far more if it didn’t take the foot off the accelerator midway through the final term. The Hawks led by 68 points six minutes into the last quarter. Just as they did in their round one clash, Hawthorn piled on the goals – this time without Lance Franklin who was sidelined due to a hamstring injury. The two highest scores Collingwood has conceded in 2012 have been against Hawthorn. The scoreline is all the more incredible considering two of Collingwood’s midfield stars had exceptional afternoons. Dane Swan had a career-high 49 possessions and kicked two goals, while Dayne Beams finished with 34 disposals and four majors. Although the Hawks recorded a vital win, coach Alastair Clarkson demonstrated that he wasn’t particularly happy when he punched a hole in a wall in the coaches box. A huge crowd of over 80,000 turned out on a September-like Saturday afternoon and the Hawks will be hoping for a similar result when the finals start in earnest.

COACHES COMMENTS
Nathan Buckley (Coll): We were dominated in all areas: contested ball, I thought their ball movement was excellent, their defence and their pressure on us was very good and we struggled to deal with all of it.

Alastair Clarkson (Haw): Of all the sides that we have played, Collingwood have probably represented the biggest scalp in terms of what they have been able to achieve as a footy club over the last two to three years.

Umpires: Margetts, Stevic, Bannister
