Match Report

It had been a chaotic week at Collingwood. Former coach Mick Malthouse was highly critical of the Magpies after their disappointing 60-point loss to Carlton the previous weekend. President Eddie McGuire took offence at Malthouse’s comments, and the spat played out extensively in the media throughout the week. But the Magpies responded in the perfect way to a turbulent seven days, fighting off a determined Port Adelaide to win by 24 points. It wasn’t an amazing performance from Collingwood, and they looked nothing like the slick machine of 2010 and early 2011, but they would have been relieved to have come away with a win. The Magpies got off to a flying start, kicking seven goals to two in the opening term, and it looked like being a reprise of the round-20 match last year when the Power were on the wrong end of a 138-point thumping. But Port fought back hard and was able to outscore the Pies after quarter time. Power coach Matthew Primus was pleased with his side’s effort, but the day came at cost as Robbie Gray ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in a sickening incident late in the game and will miss the remainder of the season.

COACHES COMMENTS
Nathan Buckley (Coll): I thought our experienced players stood up today and through the week, and it was really encouraging to see that. In the end, for all the direction the coaches set, the leaders and senior players need to drive that through the group and that was encouraging.

Matthew Primus (Port): Robbie Gray’s obviously a very important player of our future, but he’ll find his way back, and we'll miss his presence this year. We're getting sick and tired of saying that and reviewing that, so we've got to keep either finding out why or bringing in the right people to make sure these fundamental things don't happen.

Umpires: McBurney, Jennings, Ritchie
