Match Report
St Kilda faces a near-impossible challenge to make the AFL finals after suffering a heartbreaking and controversial six-point defeat at the hands of Collingwood. The win enabled the Magpies to secure third place on the ladder and a two-game buffer over fifth-placed West Coast, but is what not without controversy. With Collingwood leading by a goal and a minute remaining, the Saints mounted a late forward surge. Harry O'Brien flew for - but dropped - a mark, and the ball spilled towards the St Kilda goal with several Saints ready to pounce. But the umpire deemed that Stephen Milne had chopped the defender's arm and awarded O'Brien a free kick. Replays showed that contact with O'Brien was minimal.
A dominant display from Jolly had earlier enabled the Pies to establish a 27-point half-time lead but rookie Ahmed Saad kept the Saints in the game with four goals. St Kilda are now two games adrift of eighth-placed Essendon and, even if they were to win their remaining four matches, would require other results to go their way to sneak back into the eight. For Collingwood, the win would have been a relief for coach Nathan Buckley, particularly after the Magpies dominated the second quarter but were wasteful in front of goal during that period, kicking 5.8 to the Saints' 1.1. The Pies are a game clear of fourth-placed Hawthorn but, with a tough run to come against Sydney, North Melbourne, West Coast (at Subiaco) and Essendon, are not yet assured of a double-chance come finals time.
