Match Report

The Sydney Swans have overcome a disappointing Collingwood side to win their sixth game of the season and maintain a push for a top four spot on the AFL ladder. The win was the Swans' first against the Magpies at the MCG since 2000, and was a fitting result for coach John Longmire, who qualified for AFL life membership in the match. Longmire has now played or coached in a total of 300 official AFL matches (including pre-season games), which automatically qualifies him for the honour.

Collingwood, who were coming off a fantastic win against Geelong at the MCG a week earlier, kicked the first two goals of Friday night's match, through youngster Jarrod Witts and Travis Cloke, but were outplayed for most of the remainder of the match from that point onwards. Mike Pyke and Ben McGlynn kicked the next two goals of the match, giving Sydney the lead. Travis Cloke returned that lead to Collingwood briefly at the 25-minute mark, but when Craig Bird took a mark and received a 50-metre penalty two minutes later, he slotted a goal that gave Sydney a lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the night.

The Swans led by nine points at quarter time and extended that to 29 points at the main break, and again to 48 points at three quarter time. Each side kicked four goals in the final term as the sting went out of the game.

Adam Goodes was magnificent for the Swans, with three goals and 30 possessions, but the match was sadly marred when he was racially vilified by a Collingwood fan late in the game. The incident left Goodes deeply distressed, and he left the field soon after. The fan, a 13-year-old girl, later apologised to Goodes. The incident took on a particular significance because the AFL is celebrating Indigenous Round this week.

Dan Hannebery and Ryan O'Keefe were also excellent for Sydney, while Scott Pendlebury was probably Collingwood's standout player.

Despite winning by 47 points, the Swans actually dropped out of the top four, with Fremantle's 90-point win over Melbourne allowing the Dockers to edge the Swans out on percentage. Sydney will take on third-placed Essendon at the SCG next Saturday.

Collingwood, who have slipped to 11th on the ladder, will travel to the 'Gabba to take on Brisbane on Friday night.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Nathan Buckley (Coll): We got outworked by a side that came with a bit prove. As did we - we wanted to back up our performance of last week. We were just unable to do that. We really came out of the gates quite sluggish.

John Longmire (Syd): I thought we played some pretty good footy last week. We kept Fremantle to five goals for three-and-a-half quarters. Obviously everyone's focus after that game was on the last ten minutes but I thought we play some pretty reasonable football [prior to that]. But still, to play like we did tonight, I thought was fantastic. We ran really hard both ways. We were able to put the pressure on early in the game and maintain it for the four-quarter effort and I thought it was a fantastic win.

INJURIES
Collingwood: Russell (ankle)
Sydney: Reid (left quad)

SUBSTITUTES
Collingwood: Ben Kennedy replaced Jarrod Witts in the third quarter
Sydney: Jed Lamb replaced Sam Reid in the third quarter

UMPIRES: Margetts, Nicholls, Meredith
