Match Report

Essendon won the game, but three of their most important players will be sidelined for up to a month. The Bombers lost David Hille (calf), Nathan Lovett-Murray (hamstring) and David Myers (hamstring) to injuries during the hard-fought 25-point win. Port Adelaide were again competitive, backing up their courageous win over the St Kilda in round one, and are already showing tremendous improvement on their disastrous 2011 season. Without key forward John Butcher, the Power still found ways to conjure up goals. Jay Schulz and Justin Westhoff were dangerous up forward and were important in the third quarter as the Power got within two points at the final change. Essendon was gutsy in the final term to run away with the win, despite only having one player available on the interchange. The Bombers dominated in most key areas, but they couldn’t quite finish it off on the scoreboard. Brett Stanton backed up his 35 possessions against North Melbourne with another best-on-ground performance, as Bomber fans continue to warm to him after booing him at times last season.

COACHES COMMENTS
James Hird(Ess): Certainly our kicking, in terms of goalkicking, has got to improve. If we had have kicked straighter then the game might have been dead earlier but really, with the injuries we had, I still consider it a really good effort by our players.

Matthew Primus(Port): I thought they (Essendon) were terrific in the first half apart form their finishing. I thought it could have been all over then. I spoke to the players at half-time and said that because of their lack of finish they've given us the opportunity to still be involved in he game. To our players' credit they were able to believe in that and get involved.

Umpires: Donlon, Ritchie, Armstrong
