Match Report

Despite playing nothing short of terrible for three quarters, Essendon could almost consider themselves unlucky not to come away with the four points. The Bombers butchered a plethora of chances in front of goal – amazingly going into three-quarter time with a score 2.15 (27) - in perfect conditions under the roof at Docklands. But a blistering nine-goal to two final term almost saw them record the greatest ever three-quarter time comeback win, after trailing by 47 points at the final change. Bombers defender Courtney Dempsey marked just outside the attacking 50, but played on as the full-time siren sounded, leaving Essendon fans shattered. Although the Bombers were nothing short of terrible for three quarters, they still had an incredible 78 inside 50s, but it was just their disposal and accuracy that let them down. Sydney jumped up into second place on the ladder with the win. Swans speedster Lewis Jetta was instrumental in the four-point win, kicking three goals, including the last Sydney goal of the game. The loss was further compounded for Essendon with news that important midfielder David Zaharakis would miss a number of weeks with a quad injury.

COACHES COMMENTS
James Hird (Ess): We didn’t execute in our forward line very well - whether that's bad football, it probably is," he said. "We didn’t kick goals when we should have and we didn’t convert our opportunities early in the game, which left us with too far to go. But the end shows a lot of fight and spirit in this football team. You've just got to convert those wins and hopefully next [game] we will.

John Longmire (Syd): I couldn't have been happier at three-quarter time to come down and play Essendon … who are equal top on the ladder, on their home deck, in front of a good size crowd and (lead) 11 goals to two. There are some things we needed to do better in the last quarter. You can’t hide from that fact … We stopped but ultimately we were able to get over the line.

Umpires: Margetts, Meredith, McInerney
