Match Report
A strong second half from Fremantle has seen the Dockers draw away from the Adelaide Crows to win by 40 points at Subiaco on Saturday night. In a low-scoring first half (traditional for any match featuring a Ross Lyon-coached team) the visitors coped reasonably well with Fremantle's stifling tactics to lead by 10 points at quarter time and two points at the long break.
But the Dockers gradually ground their way to dominance in the third quarter. Matthew Pavlich gave the home side the lead with the first goal of the second half, one it would not relinquish. At the eight-minute mark substitute Tom Sheridan increased that lead to 10, before the Crows finally hit the scoreboard for the first time in the second half with a point to Jarryd Lyons and a goal to Brodie Martin midway through the third term. They were to be the only two scores of the quarter for the visitors as the Dockers put on the squeeze and counter-attacked with goals to Nat Fyfe, Zac Dawson and Hayden Ballantyne to take a 25-point lead into the last quarter.
The Crows tried to get some run going in the last quarter and reaped early reward with a goal to Josh Jenkins at the two-minute mark but within the next four minutes Nick Suban and Danyle Pearce had kicked majors for Fremantle and virtually put the result beyond doubt. Brodie Smith tried to spark Adelaide with a goal at the nine-minute mark but the game reverted to a battle of the defences after that. Fremantle kicked the only remaining two goals of the match after that, to coast to a comfortable but important win, one which keeps the Dockers well within touch of the top four. The club has a 7-4 record and sits in sixth place, but only one game plus percentage behind second-placed Hawthorn.
Aaron Sandilands (38 hitouts, eight marks) and Paul Duffield (27 disposals, five marks) were outstanding for the Dockers, while Adelaide's Brodie Smith (24 disposals, six marks) and Rory Sloane (23 possessions, seven tackles) flew the flag all day for the visitors.
The Dockers will travel to the MCG to take on Richmond on Saturday, while the Crows face a tough home encounter against the improved North Melbourne at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.
