Match Report

Fremantle defeated West Coast in a close fought and highly entertaining Western Derby at Subiaco on Saturday afternoon. The Dockers defeated the Eagles for the second time this season but were made to work much harder than most fans from either side would have anticipated.

West Coast got away to a fast start, kicking the first two goals of the match but the Dockers got themselves into the match and levelled the scores before a late goal to Mark LeCras saw the Eagles in front by five points at the first change. The Eagles then dominated the early stages of the second term but could manage just five behinds, all the good work being undone by a Hayden Ballantyne goal for the Dockers at the 12-minute mark. By half time it was West Coast by five points, 5.9 to 5.4.

The Dockers played premiership football in the third quarter, booting five goals to nil to take a 24-point lead into the last term but the Eagles surged in the lat quarter, goals to Jeremy McGovern, Xavier Ellis, Patrick McGinnity and Mark Hutchings giving West Coast an unlikely one-point lead at the 15-minute mark. But Fremantke steadied, with goals to Stephen Hill, Danyle Pearce and Ballantyne taking the margin back out to 20 points. West Coast came again, with goals top Josh Kenney and Luke Shuey and ultimately ran out of time, finishing seven points short of the Dockers.

Best for the winners included Stephen Hill (32 disposals and three goals), Nat Fyfe (31 possessions and seven tackles) and Paul Duffield (30 touches and nine marks) while Le Cras (22 possessions, six marks, two goals), Matt Priddis (nine tackles, 24 disposals) and Eric Mackenzie (11 marks and 22 touches) were among West Coast's better players.

The win kept the Dockers in the top four, ahead on percentage of Geelong, with both teams on 10 wins. They take on Melbourne in Darwin next Saturday night. By contrast the loss leaves West Coast two games out of the eight, with a tough match to come against Sydney at home next Sunday.
