Match Report

Fremantle and Richmond have produced a "Friday night thriller" at Subiaco with the Dockers overcoming a 20-point quarter-time deficit to scrape home by a single point over the Tigers.

The loss was heartbreaking and galling for Richmond fans, as the Tigers had held the lead withe two minutes to go and may have copped an unlucky goal-umpiring decision when the ball hit the goal umpire's leg as it crossed the line after a shot by Matt White. While some believed the ball had crossed the line for a goal, or at least would have had it not hit his leg, the goal umpire declared the ball had not done so before being touched and awarded a behind.

Richmond had earlier dominated the game, with Shaun Grigg and Luke McGuane kicking goals for the Tigers in the first three minutes of the match. When Jack Riewoldt kicked his first at the 13-minute mark, the Tigers had jumped to a 20-point lead. Chris Mayne and Michael Walters then kicked goals to get the Dockers moving but Chris Knights and Tyrone Vickery responded to restore the 20-point margin at quarter time.

Fremantle hit back hard in the second term, dominating the first 12 minutes. Goals to Mayne, Walters and Stephen Hill saw the Dockers take the lead at the 11-minute mark. But there was also bad news for Fremantle in this period, with Kepler Bradley injuring his knee as he kicked the ball. He was subbed out of the game and scans later revealed a season-ending ACL injury. The two sides traded goals for the remainder of the quarter, with Fremantle leading by two points as the teams left the field for the main break.

The third quarter was a dour affair with the miserly Fremantle defence allowing Richmond just two goals for the term, through Luke McGuane and Chris Knights. But the Dockers scored only three goals of their own in the same period, via Ryan Crowley, Nick Suban and Hayden Ballantyne and the margin at the last change was a slender nine points in Fremantle's favour.

With both sides desperate for a win, the last quarter was again an arm-wrestle. Mayne opened the scoring with a goal for the Dockers to give Fremantle a 14-point lead but Dustin Martin responded for the Tigers four minutes later. Vickery then cut the lead to just two points and a Matt White goal at the 26-minute mark gave Richmond a five-point lead. But the Tigers were unable to hold on as Fremantle attacked again, with Ballantyne finding free space after a boundary throw-in and kicking a goal to restore a one-point lead for the Dockers.

Richmond mounted another challenge and the ball was deep in the Tigers' forward line when the final siren sounded to the relief of the Dockers and the despair of Richmond players and fans.

After winning their first three matches, Richmond have come back to the field. They are in sixth position on the ladder and have a tough match against top side Geelong to come next Saturday. Fremantle, like the Tigers, have a 3-2 record and they will travel to Carrara to take on Gold Coast on Saturday night.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Ross Lyon (Frem): I'm relieved. Richmond were super. Their attack on the ball, their spread; they really "pantsed" our midfield. To the players' credit, they refocussed. I thought the second quarter was an emphatic response.

Damien Hardwick (Rich): We probably had much of the play in the second half; Fremantle probably dominated the first half. It was one of those battles that easily could have gone either way. You've got to make the most of the opportunities when you control the ball and we didn't do that at various stages and Fremantle did.

INJURIES
Fremantle: Bradley (right knee)
Richmond: Nil

SUBSTITUTES
Fremantle: Nick Suban replaced Kepler Bradley during the second quarter
Richmond: Robin Nahas replaced Brad Helbig during the third quarter
